70 REMARKABLE JAPANESE PLACES

Travel stories worth sharing.
"70 Remarkable Japanese Places" is Shiitake Creative's first published book — and our first official physical product. It brings together the full range of our agency's expertise: design, copywriting, photography, illustration, and storytelling, united by a shared drive to uncover destinations with untold stories.

Written in both English and Japanese, the book features 70 places from across Japan, uncovered over years of travel through the Japan Travel Awards, our annual competition celebrating inclusive and sustainable travel. From listening to the owner of a soba restaurant sing as you dine in rural Tokushima, to planting coral seeds in Okinawa, to wearing a genderless kimono at a temple inn in Yamanashi, these 70 heartwarming stories will inspire readers to see Japan a little differently.
The book’s design extends our core message: celebrating diversity, authenticity, and the richness of experiences across Japan. Each destination has its own distinct background color — a simple way of saying that no two places, and no two journeys, are ever alike. These shifting colors also serve as emotional cues, guiding readers through varied landscapes and stories as naturally as travel itself.

All 70 stories are written in both Japanese and English, but not simply translated. Each has been crafted separately for its readership, so Japanese and English speakers encounter the same place through a voice written for them.
A scrapbook-inspired approach layers illustration and photography to evoke the feeling of personal discovery.

A custom handwritten typeface carries that same spirit: human, imperfect, and sincere. Together, these choices reflect something we believe about Japan: that the most meaningful way to experience it is personally.
The book also includes three special features spotlighting inclusive and sustainable experiences across Japan, alongside unique local products from around the country.

And because a travel book should travel: the last two pages are left blank for your own memories — write in them, then pass the book on to someone else to do the same.
